Nature-Based Therapy (Ecotherapy)

Nature-based therapy, also known as ecotherapy, is the intentional integration of the natural world into the therapeutic process. It draws on our innate connection to nature as a powerful ally in healing and transformation. Whether it’s sitting beneath a tree, walking along a river path, engaging in mindfulness outdoors, or using natural imagery as a mirror for your internal world, nature becomes an active participant in the work we do together.

This approach doesn’t require you to be “outdoorsy.” It simply asks you to show up — as you are — and be open to how the natural world can support your journey toward healing, clarity, and self-discovery. Sessions may involve walking and talking, guided somatic practices, sensory awareness exercises for nervous system regulation, or nature-based rituals to mark transitions in your life. Each session is shaped by your needs and intentions.

My own journey with nature-based therapy began with the deep sense of peace, perspective, and connection I found while spending time in wild places. Over the years, nature has been both refuge and teacher — helping me navigate grief, growth, and the many unknowns of life. This personal experience, along with specialized training in ecotherapy, somatic modalities, and trauma-informed care, guides how I hold space for others in this work. I believe that healing isn’t meant to happen in isolation — and nature reminds us we are never truly alone.

Our nervous systems are wired for connection — not just with people, but with the living world. Time in nature has been shown to reduce stress, anxiety, blood pressure, and mental fatigue. It invites us to slow down, breathe deeply, and remember our place in something larger. In therapy, this natural slowing allows us to access deeper insight, emotional regulation, and creativity. Nature offers metaphors, mirrors, and quiet spaces where our inner wisdom can speak more clearly.

We’ll typically meet at a local trail, park, or natural space in the Grand Junction area (or online if we’re working via telehealth). Our session might include movement, stillness, reflection, or structured practices — always at a pace and style that feels right for you. We may walk and talk, pause at a sit spot, or incorporate mindfulness, visualization, or ritual. Nature can provide both grounding and perspective, helping you feel more connected to your body, your emotions, and your inner guidance.

Nature-based therapy is especially helpful for those navigating anxiety, burnout, life transitions, grief, trauma, or disconnection. It is also a beautiful fit for those who are highly sensitive, creative, or simply drawn to the natural world. Whether you’re craving a slower pace, seeking clarity, or needing a different kind of therapeutic space, this work may be the grounding shift you’ve been looking for.

If you have a sense that the natural world could be a partner in your healing process, I’d love to explore that with you. Reach out to learn more or schedule a session. Nature is already holding space — let’s step into it together.

Nature-Based Counseling Groups

Group Sessions

In addition to individual therapy, I offer Nature-Based Counseling Croups — a unique opportunity to heal and grow in the company of others while immersed in the natural world. These small-group sessions take place outdoors at various locations around Grand Junction, Colorado, and are designed to support emotional well-being through connection to nature, community, and self.

Group sessions integrate mindfulness practices, somatic awareness, and nature-based therapy techniques to help participants regulate their nervous systems, process emotions, and reduce stress. Each 90-minute session includes guided exercises, time for reflection, nature connection practices, and opportunities for meaningful group sharing.
